What to Know about Winter Synthetic Lawn MaintenanceAn artificial lawn makes it easy to enjoy spending time in your yard throughout the year. However, when the colder weather of winter arrives, there are a few precautions you'll need to take to keep your turf at its best and protect it from harsh conditions. Follow these simple tips for synthetic lawn maintenance in winter. Call us to schedule a consultation today!

Clear Away Any Debris Before the Snow Falls

As winter approaches, keep an eye on the weather forecast. If there is snow coming your way, take a few minutes to clear any debris from your artificial grass. This will prevent it from getting frozen into the turf underneath the snow, potentially staining it or causing other damage. A simple sweep with a natural fiber or synthetic bristle (not metal or wire) broom should be all it takes.

Leave the Snow Where It Lies

Winter synthetic lawn maintenance is not complicated. Once the snow has fallen, there is no need to do anything about it. Artificial turf is designed to drain well, so the melting snow won't cause any damage to your grass. Feel free to play in the snow or on exposed areas of turf as you normally would. This way, you can enjoy your lawn at any time, without worrying about damage.

Clear Snow Safely

If you do choose to clear away the snow, be sure to do it soon after the snow falls before it has a chance to settle and become compacted. This will make the task a lot easier. If the snow has begun to settle in, it will be much more difficult to remove, and you'll run the risk of damaging your turf.

For light snowfall, use a broom to sweep it away. If snow conditions are heavier, you may need to use a shovel. Be sure to choose a snow shovel made from plastic rather than metal to avoid tearing the turf or the base layer underneath. After shoveling the bulk of the snow away, go over any remaining snow with a broom to fully clear it.

If temperatures are below zero and the snow has frozen to the grass blades, do not attempt any synthetic lawn maintenance. Trying to remove frozen bits can tear the grass, leaving you with bare patches that will never grow back.

Avoid Salts and Other Melting Solutions

While it can be tempting to salt your artificial grass like you would your sidewalks to help the snow melt more quickly, this can be incredibly damaging to the turf. Salts and other ice-melting products can stain or discolor artificial grass, so it is far better to simply allow the snow and ice to melt away with time.
